Themed weddings are becoming exceedingly popular, thanks to imaginative couples with a flair for the unusual. When organized and executed thoughtfully, a themed wedding can blend reality with fantasy in effortless fashion. One of our favorite themes is inspired by the film Water for Elephants, which artfully recounts the story of two tenacious individuals who were destined to survive The Great Depression and eventually find each other among the whimsical twinkling of circus lights. Think rustic charm, vintage style, and a healthy dose of Americana when putting together an inspiration board for this glamorous look.

Above:A creative powerhouse, D Magazine's portrayal of this theme is worthy of applause. Both raw and romantic, the images feature a number of noteworthy props; the feathered top hat being most essential and accessible for couples considering a circus or carnival theme.

Above: We adore the quaint decorum and thoughtful details found along the reception table. Cream centerpieces show off pops of color that are echoed in the couple's vintage plate ware and menu. Colored goblets, tea light candles, and beaded table linens further the whimsical and intimate outdoor setting.

Below: Heralding a much stronger circus theme, blocked font letters, multicolored streamers, and well-traveled accessories--an elephant statue, vintage clock, giraffe figurines, old books, and suitcases--create a very avant-garde approach that borders on feeling cluttered. In order to pull it off, your event designer must have a good eye for object placement and staging.

Below: Celebrating beneath a red-and-white striped tent, this couple achieved the carnival/circus theme with impeccable style and intricate design. Notice the bride's feathered blusher and the groom's slicked backed do. Just beyond, a bridesmaid donning an aqua dress and groomsmen wearing an aqua tie and top hat reinforce the evening's theme.

In order to pull off old Hollywood glam, imagine side-swept hair and loose waves perfectly positioned and pinned beneath a birdcage or blusher veil. Polish it off with deep red lips, liquid black eyeliner--top lid only--and satin gloves, or make it your own with personal tweaks.
