Dressing the Groom

When you think of a tux, you think of dashing, debonair and dangerous. But when a groom thinks of a tux, he thinks of stiff, stuffy and stupid. And after he’s made the you the happiest women in the world, don’t you think you could make him a little happy and not force him into some traditional penguin suit? Nowadays, there are so many different versions and alternatives to a tuxedo, you’re bound to find something that will please your fiancé.

The first thing to consider when selecting gentlemen’s attire is what type of affair you are having. Anything during the day or outside, or in the summer is a less formal affair, and therefore, dictates more casual attire. But anything inside, or in the winter or specially noted more formal, requires a bit more traditional dress for the wedding party. Keep in mind the feel you are going for with your wedding, because the wedding party’s dress sets the tone for the rest of the affairs.

The most versatile, yet classic look for the groom is a tailored black suit. This differs from the traditional tuxedo because paired with different ‘accessories’, this look can be either informal or formal. In order to get the optimal effect of sleekness, it’s important to have these suits extremely tailored. One way to accomplish this is to have the suits purchased by the groom and groomsmen. Classic black suits can be timeless and can be worn for years to come.

For the different accessories you can use to make this suit different, start with the tie. Sleek silver or classic black can keep this looking formal while a bright color or interesting pattern can make this unique. Adding an interesting pocket square can also add some personality to this look. Just remember, the simpler this look, the more fun you can have with a boutonniere.

Another timeless look that is coming back with a modern twist is a grey suit. Paired with the right shirt and tie, this shell can be deemed either formal or informal. And because it’s not black, you’ll be set apart from every other wedding.

If you want something unique for a formal affair, consider a white tuxedo jacket with classic black pants and bow tie.

The clean lines of this look allows for it to be formal without it being super stiff. And it’s a throwback to the Rat Pack era where chivalry still existed. This look would also be perfect for any vintage inspired wedding.

Another look that would invoke a vintage spirit is pants with suspenders and no jacket. This is a fun look perfect for the guy who takes this day seriously, but also wants to relax and have a good time. You can also be unique in having them wear brown or navy slacks instead of the traditional black. And pair this look with a bright and fun tie.

Just as your wedding dress is your most important purchase and helps set the tone for the rest of the event, take into consideration what you and your fiancé want to put his guys in- because the bridesmaids and groomsmen should complement each other. And remember, it’s your fiancé’s special day too!
